IT IS CONFIRMED. Jessica Sanchez will be singing the US National Anthem Star-Spangled Banner in the Pacquiao-Bradley fight for the World Welterweight Championship at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas on June 10, 2012.

Speculation that the runner-up of American Idol Season 11 will sing the Philippine National Anthem Lupang Hinirang stopped after she tweeted this week, “Singing the American National Anthem @ the Pacquiao fight this Saturday in Vegas! I am sooooooooo ecstatic!!".

Instead, 14-year old Filipino-American rising musical star Kirby Asunto, who is based in New York, will be singing Lupang Hinirang. The family of Kirby migrated to the US in 2006.

I’m not sure if Jessica speaks Filipino and/or understands Filipino. It is ok for me if she doesn’t sing the Philippine national anthem.

Don’t get me wrong, guys. Yes, I like Jessica a lot. She sings incredibly great for such a young age. I rooted for her to win in AI. But, my vote would always go to those who understand what the anthem lyrics is all about. I think someone who has the capacity to comprehend each word in song lyrics would nail singing that song. Singing the national anthem with Jessica’s technical skills will be good, but a singer who understands each of the song’s lyrics while delivering a technically talented performance would be the better.

What's your view on the matter?
