American Idol's Jessica Sanchez Profile

American Idol

Introduction:

Jessica Elizabeth Sanchez is a precocious and incredibly talented singer on the 11th season of "American Idol" on FOX. The 16-year-old from Chula Vista's Eastlake neighborhood is one of two finalists, along with Phillip Phillips, who will be vying for the crown of American Idol during the finals on May 22-23, 2012.

What is her background?:

Jessica Sanchez is of Mexican and Filipino descent and was born in Chula Vista, California on August 4, 1995 to parents Gilbert and Editha Sanchez. She was raised in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista, along with two younger brothers. Her Mexican-American father was originally from Texas and is in the U.S. Navy. Her mother is Filipino-American originally from Bataan province in the Philippines. Currently home schooled and in the 11th grade, Jessica is a former student of Eastlake Middle School in Chula Vista.

Things to know about Jessica Sanchez:

Believe it or not, Jessica is shy. In middle school, when word spread at school that she sang the national anthem at a San Diego Chargers home game, she did not brag and preferred to stay in the background. Jessica started watching "American Idol" at 5. She started singing at 2, appeared on "Showtime at the Apollo" at 10, and competed on "America's Got Talent" at 11. She's never been a Girl Scout and considers herself to be a tomboy. She's also very proud of her Mexican and Filipino roots (but is not tri-lingual and only speaks English). She has twice sung the national anthem at San Diego Chargers games.
